Imagine if your beloved, non-aggressive family dog was seized by the government and condemned to death for the size and shape of his head. Seems totally ludicrous and completely unjustified, right? Well, that is the reality for the Barnes family of Belfast, Ireland. Their loving fur baby named Lennox was taken from their home two years ago under the “Dangerous Dog Act” of the UK because the measurements of his head fit within the realm of a “Pit Bull Type.” And now a judge has ruled that Lennox must be put down based on that, so he can be euthanized any day now. The court system won’t even grant the Barnes family permission to say goodbye to Lennox so that he will know that he was once loved.
But supporters of Lennox from all over the world are not rolling over and playing dead. In fact, there have been multiple offers from people in various countries to re-home Lennox. Celebrity animal trainer Victoria Stilwell, who is the star of It’s Me or the Dog, is currently in Belfast right now pleading to the government to release Lennox into her care in the US for which she would personally cover all of the expenses. The Save Lennox petition has almost 200,000 signatures and the media outcry around the world has reached a fever pitch. And unfortunately, the powers that be in Belfast haven’t changed their minds. Sadly, the Barnes’ family has exhausted all of their legal options and released the following statement on July 3rd: “the fight to spare Lennox’s life may well be over. It has been almost impossible for us to accept that we have to admit defeat. We always believed that there was some hope and that justice would prevail. We were wrong.” At this point, the family just wants to see their pup one last time, while others are still holding out hope for a miracle. Click here to sign the Save Lennox petition in the hopes that this innocent life will be spared.
