The bikini turned 66 this week! The first bikini was designed by a Frenchman-Louis Reard-who invented the two piece as an answer to women who were looking to get a better tan. He was over having to watch sun-loving ladies roll up their dowdy swimwear, and he wanted to construct a garment with as little fabric as possible, but that was still legal to wear. Remember, it was the 1940’s! Reard even gave his definition of what a “true” bikini had to do: both pieces must fit through a wedding ring. Hence, the birth of the modern-day bikini!
