BEAUTYCHAT: SPOTTING HAIR TRENDS WITH JOICO CREATIVE DIRECTOR DAMIEN CARNEY

I had so much fun yesterday at the Joico Insider luncheon at the SLS Hotel! Not only did I get to sample all of the innovative Joico products and have delish blood orange vodka cocktails prepared by an SLS mixologist, but I also got my hair tousled by Joico creative director, Damien Carney. After a few squirts of Fast-Dry Finishing Spray and the work of Damien’s magic hands, my hair looked it had emerged from an episode of Charlie’s Angels-full, bouncy and shiny! Love!

And Carney and I dished about hair trends and what he thinks will be hot at Fashion Week and the Oscars.

RCR: What do you think we will be seeing at Fashion Week in terms of hair?

DC: For Fashion Week, I think we will see the return of something simple. A more natural look. Less curl and probably more straight. But there could also be delicate textures which look more “undone.” We will see a return to texture, but not obvious, over-the-top texture. It’s not grungy, it’s not wavy and it’s not curly. But the hair looks fresh, innocent and clean. And it will be worn off the face. It’s all about making women feel more confident. By taking the hair off the face, it makes the bone structure look stronger. So it gives the sense of authority to the hair. Whether for day or night, it’s just a different feel.

RCR: We have been seeing a lot of side-swept loose waves on actresses this awards season. What do you think will be the hottest hair trends on the Oscars red carpet?

DC: I think again we will be seeing a lot of hair worn down. It tends to cycle. Before, it was worn up quite a bit. And at last Oscars, the hair was less rigid than ever before. And a lot more believable. There is a sense of luxury to the hair. You feel like you could run your fingers through your hair without losing your diamond ring! Before, hair was more constructed and stiff. So I think we will see more hair down and half-up-half-down. You will see people wearing it smooth because that is what they look good in, and some will have a little bit of wave in their hair. I don’t think that will ever change. But I don’t see the hair being very lacquered and contrived. A more natural sense of beauty.

RCR: And who do you think has the best hair in Hollywood?

DC: I like Eva Mendes. She is very natural with her beauty and doesn’t conform. And even when she is out and about, she has fun with it. She doesn’t seem to take the Hollywood thing so seriously. She doesn’t feel like she has to conform. And she represents her style so beautifully. She is never too hard or too forced.
