The wildly popular and Oscar winning documentary, The Cove, premiered in Japan this past weekend to a few sold out crowds, as well as some protesters. Previously, showings had been postponed due to protests and a telephone campaign by angry nationalists to halt the eye-opening movie from being shown. The film depicts the annual and brutal slaughter of bottle nose dolphins in the Japanese fishing village of Taiji. Most of the Japanese people in the film have their faces blurred out, and the fisherman in the movie do not want to be shown without their permission.

For those of you who have seen the film, you know that Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson is interviewed in The Cove which infuriates many Japanese nationalists as his organization has been deemed a “terrorist organization” and he himself is on Interpol’s wanted list by urging of the Japanese government for interrupting whaling activities.

This time around, Japanese audiences made their way to the theaters to see The Cove for themselves, and many of those shows were sold out. Said audience member Tomokazu Toshinai, “I didn’t know about dolphin hunting. Whether it’s TV or movies, Japanese have a right to know these things.” 16 other theaters in Japan will start screening the film in the coming weeks.

Even the film’s director, Louis Psihoyos wasn’t sure if it would ever be seen in Japan. He stated, “I told the crew when we started making ‘The Cove’ that we were not making a movie but starting a movement. But only in my wildest dreams did I believe ‘The Cove’ would be screened in Japan. The resistance by a few right-wing nationalists to force theaters to not show the movie sparked a nationwide free-speech debate which has invigorated deeper thinking there. This movie has developed into a tool for social change — a powerful weapon of mass construction. I will never underestimate the profound power of a film again.”

Stylish celebrity moms-to-be gathered at the Pea in the Pod store in Beverly Hills last night as Heidi Klum, towering above everyone in spiked stiletto Christian Louboutins and a yellow and white sequined Jenny Packham mini dress, unveiled her 2010 Summer Collections of her maternity lines for A Pea in the Pod and Motherhood Maternity. And the moms to be loved the clothes! Heidi, in an attempt to design maternity clothes that were fashionable and comfortable, told me about how she never had cute clothes when she was pregnant at first-having to resort to wearing “mu-mus” to hide her bump. And so Lavish and Loved were born! And the collection is a winner for those endowed in the belly-think sexy sequin tops, skinny jeans, animal print tunics, strapless maxi dresses, and lots of layered pieces like vests, leggings, cardigans, and flowing silk tops. As if she isn’t busy enough, Klum is gearing up to start filming the 8th season of Project Runway which she promises is the hardest season yet.:

Also on hand to view Heidi’s maternity wear were Dad and Mom to be-James Van Der Beek and girlfriend Kimberly Brook. James had me cracking up when describing expectant fathers books, saying that many were written by “Neanderthals!”:

A pregnant Jodie Sweetin from Full House looked amazing & revealed her food obsession from her first pregnancy & why she would let herself have it this time around:

EXTRA’s Mario Lopez sent pregnant girlfriend Courtney Mazza out to hang with other moms-to-be. Check out what kind of a Dad she thinks Mario will be, and also, are they ready for baby #2?:

Friday was the third and final day of “The Skinny on the Red Carpet” presented by Oral-B Pulsonic at HAVEN360. I had the chance to chat with comedic lovebirds Nia Vardalos and Ian Gomez, who is a huge Project Runway fan-who knew? He also told me that he hasn’t seen Avatar because “3-D makes me vomit!….Right into my popcorn!” Yuck! Meanwhile, Nia revealed to me that her hubby’s co-star on Cougar Town-Courtney Cox-is her “girl crush.” I also chatted with Audrina Patridge who mentioned to me that Alexander McQueen was her favorite designer “to wear on the Red Carpet.” Audrina was far from alone at the suite-arriving arm in arm with boyfriend Ryan Cabrera and an army of photographers.

The Golden Trailer Awards, presented by Premiere.com, happened that evening at HAVEN360 with the trailer from A Serious Man taking home top honors. Rock pianist ELEW shredded the piano as guests like Audrina Patridge, Ryan Cabrera, Mekhi Phifer, Courtenay Semel, Ryan Devlin, Brittany Gastineau, and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul (who was excited for the season premiere party for his show this Tuesday) watched in amazement as he rocked the house.
